After two delays and years of waiting, Grand Theft Auto VI now has something very practical: a download button. Rockstar Games says pre-loading begins on Tuesday, 10 November, ahead of the global launch on Thursday, 19 November.
When and how much
On PlayStation 5, pre-loading opens at midnight local time on 10 November. On Xbox Series X|S, it starts at the same moment worldwide: 12 a.m. GMT on 10 November. Some pre-order pages had listed 12 November, but Rockstar's own announcement and its support page both say the 10th.
The game will need up to 212 GB of space, depending on your console. That's more than a fifth of a 1 TB drive, so now is a good time to delete that game you finished in 2024.
Boxed copies on shelves won't save the download either: physical versions come as a code in a box, and retailers are expected to have them from 12 November.

Pre-loading isn't playing early
Downloading early doesn't unlock anything. The game opens on 19 November, and it rolls out by time zone, as midnight arrives in each part of the world. Players in New Zealand will be among the first in; players on the US west coast will be among the last. Rockstar has published a regional table so you can check your exact time.
The long road to here
GTA VI was first meant for autumn 2025. It then moved to 26 May 2026, and a year ago, on 6 November 2025, Rockstar pushed it again to 19 November 2026. As of this week, neither Rockstar nor its owner Take-Two has announced any further change. The game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only; there's no PC version at launch.
For parents
Like the earlier games in the series, GTA VI is made for adults and is expected to carry an M (Mature 17+) or PEGI 18 rating, with violence, crime and strong language. If it shows up on a teenager's wishlist, it's worth a look at the rating first.
