Same Netflix, same shows: about $5 a month in India, almost $28 in Switzerland

Netflix doesn't have one price. It has dozens. We looked at what the Standard plan costs in different countries this October, and the gap is wild, even inside Europe.

You pay for Netflix, you get Netflix. Same catalogue of series, same "Are you still watching?" button. But what you pay depends a lot on your passport, or at least on your bank card.

The price list

A price check of Netflix's own plans pages on 17 October 2026, across 31 countries, shows the Standard plan (HD, two screens, no ads) costing:

• India: ₹499, about $5.26

• Japan: ¥1,590, about $10.14

• Estonia and Latvia: €9.99, about $11.18

• Italy: €13.99, about $15.66

• Germany: €15.99, about $17.90

• United Kingdom: £13.99, about $18.70

• United States: $19.99, before sales tax

• Ireland: €18.99, about $21.26

• Denmark: DKK 149, about $22.31

• Switzerland: CHF 22.90, about $27.78

So the Swiss pay more than five times what Indians pay, for the very same plan. Another tracker, updated on 27 October, found Standard even cheaper in Pakistan, at Rs 800, under $3.

Put another way: for what one Swiss subscriber pays in a month, someone in India could watch for about five months. A household in Japan pays about half of what an American household pays, before US sales tax is even added. Brazil is cheap too, at R$51.90, around $10, and so is South Korea at 13,500 won.

Europe isn't one price either

This is the part that surprises people. The euro is the same coin in Tallinn and Dublin. Netflix isn't. Standard costs €9.99 in Estonia and Latvia, €13.99 in Italy, €15.99 in Germany and the Netherlands, and €18.99 in Ireland. Nearly double, inside the same currency.

Who just paid more

Between July and October 2026, prices went up in Germany and the UK. In Germany, Standard went from €13.99 to €15.99, and the ad-supported plan jumped from €4.99 to €6.99, up 40%. In the UK, Standard rose from £12.99 to £13.99, and the plan with ads from £5.99 to £7.99. The other countries that tracker follows kept the same local prices.

Why the difference?

Netflix sets prices market by market. What people earn, how many competitors there are, local taxes and currency all play a part. Most advertised prices include VAT or GST, while US prices don't include sales tax, so the comparison isn't perfectly like-for-like. Exchange rates also move every day, which is why the dollar figures are approximate. The local prices are the ones to trust.

There's also the plan with ads, which exists in some countries and not others. Where it exists, it's usually far below Standard: $8.99 in the US, for example, against $19.99 without ads.

And the top plan? Premium, with 4K and four screens, costs about $36 in Switzerland and about $7 in India.

What it means for you

Before you think about "moving" your account to a cheaper country: Netflix ties your plan to where you live, and using tricks to pay a foreign price usually breaks its rules. Not worth losing your account over a few euros.

The useful lesson is simpler. Check which plan you actually use. If you watch alone on one phone, you may be paying for screens nobody turns on. And if your price just went up, the ad-supported plan is still the cheapest way in, almost everywhere. The popcorn costs the same either way.
